It’s Women’s History Month and we are enthusiastically talking about the impact of calling girls “bossy” and how women network and help each other. Let’s start by looking at how the men have always done it.
The ‘good old boys network’ has represented the club where big decisions are made behind closed doors or on the golf course. The boys club has historically had the dark side of being exclusive and only male. No girls allowed. Yet, they did one thing right. They not only valued action on behalf of each other, it was expected.
A few weeks ago, I listened in on a conversation of men (who would never describe themselves as good old boys) talking about their lives, careers and work. In the span of about an hour of pre-dinner drinks, there was very high productivity without any real effort.
How you cultivate your network is just as important as how you engage with it. In the end, the "who you knows" will remember more than just your name…they’ll remember how they interacted with you. How are you engaging with your network? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
