Innovation is a challenge in any environment. The key to success is overcoming self-imposed barriers to entry and creating an environment where leaning into discomfort and challenging the status quo becomes the norm. This is not to be construed as constantly challenging leadership, making costly/thoughtless leaps of faith, and carelessly running into walls. Rather, through a solid understanding of the customer need and culture, informed decisions about risk and investment can be made. This discussion highlights examples of complex change and innovation in a challenging environment, using real-life examples of the multi-billion dollar effort to develop and Air Force for the sovereign country of Afghanistan via a multi-national coalition of military players on an international stage.
